/>

So there you have it: the whole premise of this show. As in one of Laurie's previous post, it's all about the eights (or eight is enough). Eight artists, eight pieces of artwork. Eight by eight in dimension. OK, well, Dan decided that he would do eight FEET by eight FEET. So I said, only ONE of those, please!

Nearly a year ago, I wondered out loud if I should do a show based on this lucky number eight thing. I was talking out loud to Pat Berrett about it. He said, "Sure, why not? You can do it!". Of course, the next question from me was if he would like to be one of the artists in the show. As you can see his name is on the roster of artists in this show so you know he said, "yes". So, thank you, Pat for giving me that nudge and for participating in this show. And thank you too for having faith in me to run with this and for offering me advice on the "how to's" of it all.

When I mentioned the show concept to other artists who are also friends of mine, they all jumped on board. Thank you Leau, Leighanna, Raine, Regina, Laurie and Dan for joining me on this adventure! What a previlege and a thrill to be in a show with your friends.

I hope when you read this blog if haven't already, go back to the earliest post to get a feel for the process we went through. And, by all means do visit the blogs of the artists in this show. Just click on their names and you will be linked you to their blogs. Get to know who they are; they are really neat and talented people!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope that you also get a chance to see the show.

08/08/08: Lucky day, Lucky Number. My son Josh and I took about 20 minutes when he was here for the weekend recently and shot photos on our property and next door. The US Forest Service has been doing some thinning in my front yard (I'm 15 ft. from the forest boundary) and the eight stump is probably about 40 yards from my front door on the Cibola National Forest. Being an artist who works in multiple mediums, I found it impossible to choose one medium to go with. My personality is such that I want to do it all. This was my 'solution' to that quandry. I took my photographs and transferred them to fabric (100% Kona cotton). I ended up using different ways of transferring the images. The initial concept was that they would be all transferred by way of the ink jet iron on process. I found that this made the fabric very stiff and awkward to work with. Especially with the scale that I was working in and using gathered fabric technique. So there are several techniques involved in the transfer processes that I used.

I think photographic images can be ideal as a graphic image for textiles. Why not? If I knew how to translate this process to a grander scale to make life sized pieces (human sized), I probably would!

I had to create my own pattern and make prototypes to work out the logistical problems (as most artists do) of the dresses. A qualifier though: (in a Richard Nixon kind of voice) I am not a seamstress! But I am stubborn, so that's how I work through my shortcomings. OK, and sheer panic that I wasn't going to have anything ready for this show.

So, there you have it; the rationale for how I ended up with what I did.

Oh, and special thanks to Gary at Southwest Custom Acrylics for coming up with a wonderful soultion for acrylic covers on my shadow boxes. The acrylic that came with the frames were too shallow for the dimensionality of the work (they come flat which normally works for shadow box frames). I think there's a market for these covers in the framing world for all of us who like to work in mixed media. If you come to the show, you'll see what I'm talking about as far as these covers go.

LU: Prosperity

The first image for this dress is of a reef off of the coast of Moloka'i. Slag glass is the glass at the bottom of these huge vats at glass factories. Kinda like scraping crystalized sugar from the bottom of a pot and it comes off in big chunks. There is this art gallery north of Dixon on the way to Taos that has a whole table full of this glass outside (yes, it's for sale). For the life of me, I cannot remember thier name. Rip something. Anyway, so I went crazy with these glass models (it was one of those "stop the car I see slag glass!" moments. Very few people can relate to this level of obsession. I think many would be frightened of it.

The second image is a close up of pink bougenvilla flowers in my dad's yard in Ho'olehua, Moloka'i.

HE: Harmonious

The images for this dress are of peeling paint of an old gas pump located in Ft. I was a bit shocked as I was expecting it on Thursday. So now I must run down to the hardware store and get some wood to make the frame and some hinges so it can fold up and be transported.

On to the quality of the print. I thought I had requested it be printed on a matte surface but with all the printers I had asked this the one I need too I did not. So it has a bit to much glare. Bummer. The vinyl is a nice heavy weight with black backing, so that should help prevent light shining through it.

First off it is a bit overwhelming at that size. As I started to look it over I quickly realized that certain elements are very difficult to make out. The print is a bit darker in some areas than I would like and a bit fuzzy in areas I needed it crisp. This is probably due to the resolution these banners are printed at. It looks good, but I think if I had the money I would print on canvas.

I am very impressed at the turn around time of the printers and the knowledge they have. Echod Graphics based in New York.

Now off to framing.

Printer Secured

I finally got a printer that will print within my budget. The only draw back is that their specs where quite a bit different. Not sure what kind of hands I'll end up with when I finally get to go shopping for them but probably something similar unless I find some chartreuse, neon-glow, ultra modern ones. That would make them more interesting, I'm sure.

The one on the left is one of those typical mixed media, never could be duplicated sorta pieces. All the texture was accidental, a result of an attempt to deviate from the recommended components of a crackle technique. The one one the right turned out a bit more like it was supposed to except that the background (which was the residue of a failed photo transfer) added a yellow cast that I don't love. I kinda like the one on the left better but the other will be completed and can be a backup just in case there's a run on crackled, digital clock collages.

Printing Problems

Here I was going to post a nice explanation of the art piece, but now I am scrambling to find a printer that will print 100" x 100" cmyk.

The printer that I had secured, and at a great price, will not print the piece due to the nature of the content. I was on the phone for at least 30 minutes explaining away all the different elements of the work. They re-convened to discuss whether or not they would print it based on my detailed explanation. Sadly, I was emailed that they would not. I respect their decision and the values they hold on what their company prints. In an odd way it is kinda nice to know that there are still companies out there that have values and they do not place money before them.

The printing company referred me to a few other printers and they were almost 3x as much, which puts printing out of my budget.

So if any of you know of any large format printers that can print cmyk at 100" x 100" please send me an email at micro590@hotmail.com.

Thank you,

Dan.

V8x8 checkerboard

Can't seem to get a decent photo of this one because of glare but I'll try to scan it when I'm sure it's completely dry. But I have down business with them before and know their work and knowledge is good.

The image I posted has some elements left out but I will post a final with explanation of what this is all about.

Components

You are looking at components of my 8 x 8 x 8 project. I like these ladybugs and growing up, we were told that they were good luck (especially if they landed on you).

And, I attempted to make my own hangers (miniature ones). This is prototype numero tres. Ugh! It wasn't working for me and by this time, I am a bit frustrated.

So, I resorted to doing this. A "no brainer" as they say. I don't know why I fought this approach to begin with because it worked oh-so-well. The ones I ended up using were pre-made. They were just the right size and I was using them as a "model". So much for that, huh?

So, now I have eight of them. All components are in place and ready for the final segment of putting it all together. Ah! But I haven't revealed what they are going to go on and how. That will come in a future posting, so be patient, Grasshopper!

In the meantime, at the end of April, I had to seek out a new venue to exhibit this show at. Not an easy feat being only a few months from our opening date. Which HAS to be on August 8th since it is the whole premise of it all.

As luck (or FORTUNE) would have it, I did secure a rather nice venue! It was formerly known as DCAC (Downtown Contemporary Art Center) but is now called 105 Studios. Oddly enough, this was the venue I had first approached last September for this show, but because of a business transition it was going through, they were not booking for 2008. I think it is quite serendipidous that I ended up with what I had first sought out. Somewhere in it all is a life lesson about letting go and trusting the Universe to take care of you.

Boy, do I feel lucky!

Six of them

Not done yet, but here's six of them. I don't want to give away the mystery. It's different from anything I've done before, probably because I'm freshly back from Artfest '08 and loaded up on new techniques I'm dying to try. I'm also anxious to explore new themes and my less-than-whimsical side. But not to worry, the whimsical side will still be there for the 8x8 show as well. Hey, if I had 8 sides I'd try to get them all in the show!

Eight is Enough or Enough of Eight, Already!

Maybe I’m just over-thinking this whole 8x8x8 thing. Ever since I agreed to participate I’ve been rolling some ideas around in my head. A lot of those have gone by the wayside but I’ve actually enjoyed the thinking through process even though I haven’t made any real tangible progress as of yet.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

My first thought was to make one piece that would be divided into 8 - 8”x8” squares that would then hang about a half inch apart. I still like that idea because then I only need to focus on one larger piece rather than eight small individual ideas. Maybe I’m just lazy but somehow that appealed to me. But then I started pondering other possibilities.

Perhaps I’m zeroing in too much on the whole 8x8x8 thing but it is intriguing and in doing so I’ve discovered some interesting things and had some happy coincidences. One thing I’ve discovered is that in the Greek language the word for Jesus, “Iesous”, has a numeric value of 888. (The Greek language didn’t have symbols for numbers – they just assigned a numeric value to each letter to convey numbers.) As a believer in Jesus Christ and a participant in this 8x8x8 project that was an exciting discovery. I just haven’t been getting any inspiration as to how to incorporate that knowledge into any art in any meaningful way. Also, the name of Jesus and the number 8 in the Bible are associated with new beginnings so that was fun to ponder and a few things came to mind as I thought about possibilities such as: birth, a seed, spring, resurrection, marriage, etc. I thought for a while I might really head that direction. Still might. Still deciding.

But then I started thinking more in a graphic design direction that would incorporate the various ways to express, “8” – numeric, letters/words, roman numerals, etc., all arranged in some interesting (hopefully), almost abstract design that I would then produce in eight different mediums. I still like that idea and might go that direction. Maybe not though because it seems more labor intensive and stressful since I’d be shooting somewhat for a cohesiveness and visual similarity between all the pieces.

I also had fun thinking about different things in this world associated with the number eight such as crazy eights, an eighth note, being behind the eight ball, an octopus, a spider, etc. I also began to be quite aware of any eights that I would see when out and about and had a happy coincident when we visited Portales a few weeks ago to see our youngest daughter do her cheerleading thing for an ENMU basketball game. While waiting for the game to begin, I glanced up at the scoreboard and there on either side, advertising for Super 8 Motel and a local TV station, were “8’s”. The goal that evening became catching the time clock at 8:08. Finally in the fourth quarter I finally succeeded but had accidentally left the camera in video mode after filming the cheerleader’s halftime routine and consequently I have a low resolution and unusable still photo from the video. It made for an amusing evening anyway. Oh well, thankfully there’s Photoshop!

Another thing I played with for a couple of days was how three eights (888) can be made to look like animals or people and so of course my next thought was more about 3’s of a kind rather than 8’s. Three blind mice was one of the brief sketches I made but I gave up on that idea when I happened to see a piece somewhere (on a blog or in a magazine) that had three blind mice in it. I don’t want to steal ideas (or even look like I’m stealing ideas) from other artists so I never got back to thinking that one through.

My latest idea of doing something with my eight favorite sayings developed because of an uncompleted Valentine’s Day project. I had cut a square into a paper-maché heart and thought about how I could have stuff springing out of it. That made me think of one of my favorite sayings, “You’ll know what you’re full of by what spills out when you get bumped.” I don’t think this is my favorite idea for the 8x8x8 project but I’ll probably use it later for something.
So there you have it. Three months of posting all in one (sorry ‘bout that) and still nothing to show for it except a partially faked photo (just the last eight on the timeclock). Ok, I’ll admit I am over-thinking it but honestly in the past 2.5 months I’ve had more time for productive thinking rather than any actual art production. I’m hoping to start getting my hands dirty soon.

Urban Alters

One of the things I love the most about New Mexico is the showy way that religion is right out there. I thought I'd be further along by now, but life has unexpected twists and turns that causes me to have to switch gears (y'know, like my main drive getting fried...). Not to mention hooking up a new printer/scanner as the old one which still works isn't compatible with the new OS, Vista and the endless list of woes that came with that process. Sigh...
So, really this isn't the real 'mccoy', but a mock up of what I'm doing since I need to work out unexpected quirks. For my 8 x 8s I've decided to go with my favorite medium-of-the-moment - encaustics! I've decided to call my group "Obsessive" as encaustics bring out the OCD in me. I can spend hours using an 1/8" wide scraper to carefully scrape back layer after layer of wax. And I enjoy every single second of it! Kinda sick, eh? I've finished 4, only photographed 3 so far. I don't want to show the complete pieces - but will share some closeups. To view the images larger (to really see all the waxy goodness) just click on them.

Peace,

Raine

JANUARY & FEBRUARY

I can never just work on one piece at a time, I always seem to have 10 million projects going at once. I'm intrigued as to where Dan is going with his sketch below. I can't even guess, except for the figure. Above is the start of a new mosaic collage I'm working on for 8x8x8, called "Expect Miracles." In the news report, they said that the 8/8/08 date was even luckier due to the number 8 repeating itself three times. I got to thinking about how neat it would be to have a show on that day and to have artists submit each eight pieces of work. Suggesstions came in, "why not 88 artists?". That sounded terrifying to me in trying to get 88 artists to submit each 8 pieces of work that are 8" by 8" in dimension, let alone curating and hanging the show. I've never curated a show before, so this is all new waters for me to venture into.

Then the obvious solution was to have 8 artists in the show; very manageble. Easy enough being in a very supportive community of artists to put the call out. I just hope that by excluding the invitation from the rest of the community that no one feels hurt! Each of of will have 8 pieces of work that are 8" by 8". Well, except for Dan. His idea was so unique and exciting (and I'm sure the others are too, but I don't know what they are up to yet) that I had to let him run with it.

I am excited by this project and Leighanna Light wanted to do a parallel project with other artists that are out of state (although at this post , a site for the exhibiton has not been determined). I will post that link when I have it! It should be pretty exciting!

I've seen Dan's concept and I can't wait to see it completed! Pat Berrett has already completed one or two of his pieces already. I worked on my concept and found a way (gosh, I hope it works!) to incorporate several of the mediums I like to work in within each piece. The image posted here is a hint of what will appear in one of the works.
